Tidewater Community College, Portsmouth VA
Tidewater Community College, Portsmouth VA
Community College’s in America are fastly becoming institutions where emerging fields of study are first introduced at affordable prices. As the nations community college enrollment explodes the architecture and design community works hard to accommodate the needs of such projects. Burt Hill Architects in Washington D.C. have worked with David Allen Company on many projects. The goal for Burt Hill is always to optimize every aspect of design with performance while minimizing compromises. The Tidewater Community College was a project with over 30,000 sq/ft. of public space. Burt Hill initiated the design with a desire to integrate public spaces with the various building functions, and to create a smooth transition between them. The building lobbies and corridors incorporate a mix of white terrazzo with bands of grey and black. The distinction between colors works to emphasize seating areas, entry alcoves, and intersections within the space. The versatility and growing trend of custom terrazzo logos is showcased at each of the entrances into the school. The focal point of the project is a sculptural element, which was designed at the base of the pre-cast epoxy terrazzo monumental staircase. The sculpture intent was to both project horizontal seating at multiple levels as well as act as an ADA barrier in lieu of using handrails underneath the stairs. The sculpture framework once again called on the expertise of David Allen Company to execute an artistic installation of poured in place epoxy terrazzo. The challenges to grind and polish edges and get into tight spaces required the technicians to work with a full assortment of hand grinding tools. The work was designed knowing the capability of The David Allen Company. The sculpture was performed to the David Allen Company standard of excellence and serves as a public showcase of functional art in architecture.

Halifax Health Medical Center: France Tower, Daytona Beach FL
Halifax Health Medical Center: France Tower, Daytona Beach FL
Named for the First Family of NASCAR, the “France” Tower is a 10-story addition to the Halifax Health Medical Center campus in Daytona Beach Florida. With over 180 new state-of-the-art private patient rooms the France Tower boasts the states largest Emergency Department.Epoxy terrazzo was selected as the flooring material of choice for the beautiful new main lobby on the ground floor, as well as all of the lobby and waiting spaces on all ten floors of the bed tower. Terrazzo was also used in the monumental staircase. The pre-cast stair treads and risers were a considered a necessary addition to maintain the low cost to maintain the facility. The floor design originated from the pressed ceiling pattern found in the hospital’s original lobby, constructed in the Spanish-Moorish style, in 1928. The geometric interpretation of the Moorish pattern is supports the architecture of the space. The 4-color design was created by the interplay and overlap of squares, and rotated squares of different scales. Each terrazzo color compliments some aspect of the overall interior color palette.
There are plans to continue to use terrazzo because of its beautiful appearance and durability. The hospital would like to one day knit the entire campus aesthetics’ together and believe that terrazzo is one of the best way’s to accomplish the desired effect.

The Renaissance Academy, Virginia Beach VA
The Renaissance Academy, Virginia Beach VA
The Renaissance Academy is an alternative education center located in Virginia Beach that combines middle school with high school. The project qualifies for LEED silver accreditation. As the architects of RRMM were designing this school they felt that with the focus on sustainability epoxy terrazzo was the obvious option for flooring. The customary specification of corridors, lobbies, and cafeteria was extended to include all classrooms. In this case that meant over 180,000 total square feet of epoxy terrazzo making The Renaissance Academy the largest terrazzo installation in a school in The David Allen Companies 90 year history. The project design is one that was taken from the “De Stijl” (The Style) Dutch Art Movement in the 1920’s, which incorporates primary colors, and simplified visual compositions in the vertical and horizontal directions. The Piet Modrian influence is represented throughout the building where geometric intersecting forms fill the corridors with subtle color and oversized shapes. Neutral field colors with accents in teal, green, yellow, and orange were selected to help create cheerful, yet relaxed learning environment. Divider strips were used to accomplish the artistic goals of the project by forming rectangles and circles that compliment the vertical form use on the walls in windows. Overall the epoxy terrazzo flooring helped to bring together the cohesive atmosphere for the students and facility.
The David Allen Company showed why it’s the leader in the terrazzo industry by installing The Renaissance Academy’s terrazzo flooring at the highest standard with great time efficiency.

UNC Lineberger Cancer Facility, Chapel Hill NC
The UNC Lineberger Cancer Facility is the most recent in the line of top tier research and medical facilities to be added to the UNC Chapel Hill University campus. Zimmer, Gunsul, and Frasca Architects out of Seattle WA worked to design a Cancer facility that incorporates human understanding and honors the qualities of the facilities primary function. The design team selected terrazzo flooring early in the projects design based on it’s enduring quality, low maintenance requirements, and versatility in complimenting the special concept of the design. Additionally, terrazzo has performed wonderfully in health care facilities across the board only adding to its appeal. The interior design team was very pleased with the range of colors available through utilizing a variety of glass, marble, and mother of pearl chips. The large scale curvilinear floor design compliments the building’s lines as well as the other interior finishes. Terrazzo flooring helped maintain the commitment to environmentally responsible design by incorporating organic materials. The David Allen Company was exemplary in the support provided regarding color, product selection, as well as sample and mock-up preparation. David Allen Companies trade expertise continued through the entire installation process thoroughly satisfying both the design team as well as the owner.
